Visiting Soave on Christmas holidays
Hello everybody!
Today we're in Soave hanging out and looking for something to do on this sunny winter day. Although it's small, our village is gaining more and more popularity and it's common to see foreign people walking around. Nevertheless this usually happens during summer because the panorama is certainly at its best, the hills are green and the vineyards gorgeous.
But how's like staying here in winter? Does this little town have a fascinating side to show? The pro Loco in Soave is pretty active and updated (https://www.facebook.com/SoaveProLoco/)
Well, events are increasing every year but there's one I wouldn't miss and it's a tradition here.
That's why we've headed to the Bassano neighborhood, where the Church of Santa Maria della Bassanella is (http://www.soaveturismo.it/portfolio/chiesa-di-santa-maria-assunta-della-bassanella/?lang=en).
If you come down from the castle, you can find it on the path back to the centre. This location plays an important role, as this is considered a mystic place and the pivotal point of the Soave Christian religious life in May, August and December mainly. Many people are devoted to it and it's always crowded when events are on.
Our daughters are somehow linked to it too, as this is also where Saint Lucy appears on the night of the 12th December on a chariot, pulled by a donkey and accompanied by her "Castaldo" to greet the children and offer them candies and sweets.
On Christmas days this place becomes the location where farm tools are shown and farm animals are kept as a reminder of Soave true rural origins.
That's why it's not a weird thing to see salamis, wine, vegetables and fruit exposed just next to the Church entrance!
Today, 6th January, is a special day, as it's the day the Wise men reach Jesus' cave and the Bassanella is in celebration. The priest has gathered all children to pray the Lord and after it volounteers welcome them with warm drinks and a nice slice of the typical sweet of Verona: the so called pandoro.
The population is never disrespectful towards this sacred place though and they are all happy to meet because here Italian, rural and religious traditions merge and get well together.
It's time now to show you what is worth a visit if you come by this time of the year. The province of Verona is thought to be one of the most interesting areas where you can admire nativities of all kinds.
Well, Soave is one of the villages listed among the ones offering this experience.
If you are keen on miniatures and modeling, don't miss the opportunity to visit the diorami exposition, a show of many different handmade nativity types and settings coming from nearby cities and regions.
It's about a temporary exhibition this year on from 08/12/19 to 19/01/20 on festivity days and weekends, supported by volounteers and usually open 9-12 am and 2:30-6 pm. The place is just next to the Bassanella Church, it's a smaller Church called Santa Maria dei Domenicani.
Here you'll have the opportunity to enjoy the Amazing creations all dedicated to the nativity, proposed in many different environments, each with its characteristic and charme.
I'd like to share an animation with you, in order to give you and idea of the things you might see if you opt for Soave these days.
And that's how you can have a joyful merry free day in Soave!

Our children are Always delighted to pay a visit to here because of the atmosphere and the animals of course!
This year there's been a surprise too, as the donkey Ginetta has given birth to a little beautiful one and the parish has called a contest to give him a name...
